10/25 Snooze Button & Wake Up BFC "Heaven"

Introduction

  • Draw Heaven
Lesson

  • Read 1 Corinthians 15:1-11. What is the Gospel? Is that what you are spreading?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 15:12-19. What does this say to those who believe that there is nothing after this death?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 15:20-28
  • Read 1 Corinthians 15:29-34. The final statement is a quotation from the Greek poet Menander. He notes that instead of maturing in the faith, the Corinthians are instead still letting pagans influence their beliefs and lifestyles.
  • Read 1 Corinthians 15:35-49. The contrast is actually between a body animated by one type of life, and a body animated by another type. Our current body is run by the ordinary energy that keeps us breathing and blood circulating. Future body will be run by God’s own spirit.
  • Read 1 Corinthians 15:50-57. Ultimate victory
Blurred Lines:

  • What types of myths and theories of Heaven can be debunked by reading through 1 Corinthians?
Side notes:

  • 1 Corinthians 16 talks about the collection for the Jerusalem church that needs to be taken up from the Corinthians.  He finishes with personal requests.
  • Any overall questions about 1 Corinthians?
  • What  have you learned? What stuck out the most?
Closing Prayer:

  • 1 Corinthians 15:58

Weekly Update 10/19-10/25

Verse of the week: Psalm 139:1-16
"O LORD, you have searched me
       and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.
You hem me in—behind and before;
you have laid your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths,
you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,"

 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
       your works are wonderful,
       I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
       were written in your book
before one of them came to be."

Wednesday, October 21
We will begin our discussion of Wall-E Wednesday, starting at 6:30. We will be talking about stewardship the next two weeks and this week we will be discussing the stewardship of our world and God's creation.  We hope you will join us.

Friday, October 16
We will be having our final tailgate of the year (weather permitting) at Bowling Green High School starting at 5:30pm and ending right before kick-off at 7:00pm. We ask that you would bring food to contribute to the tailgate, and we will supply the drinks. Come and join us for our last tailgate stop on our 2009 Tailgate Tour!

Sunday, October 18
We will be concluding our BFC and Ignite series this week. Our "Blurred Lines" and "Tug O' War" series have shown us the difference in popular thought and culture and what the Word says. Make sure to come as we finish out this series.

Sunday night we will conclude a very successful Masquerade series with a worship service from 6:00-7:30. So far we have tackled wearing masks to fit in, change your personality, hide your pain from friends and family, and last night we talked about the masks that we try to put on with God.  Sunday we are going to focus on removing all these masks and living a life as our true selves. We will also launch next month's Ignite theme. We hope you will join us in the auditorium for this great night!

Youth Retreat
We have 25 kids signed up to go on the youth retreat in a few weeks!  We are really looking forward to the trip and growing together as a family. Just a reminder that we will be having a PARENTS-ONLY meeting on November 1 from 5:30-6:00 (right before Ignite). Our sponsors for the trip will be Jared, Lindsay, Jason and Kim Gumm, and Marrissa and Trace Bryant.

Texting Updates
For those of you who have texting, we now have a texting service that will allow you to receive SMS text messages from 'The Movement' to keep you up-to-date with everything that is going on. We will continue to use all other avenues to keep everyone in the loop, but this is another way for us to stay in contact with some of you. Just go to

Have a great week!

10/18 Ignite "Masquerade-Con Artist"

Devotion-Jared Graves

Intro

  • "Catch Me IF You Can"- Frank Abangale Story
Devotion

  • We’ve mistakenly assumed that we can put on many different faces in front of God. Call it the Facebook curse. We believe that God has to ask our permission to see who we are and what we are doing.
  • Psalm 139:11-12, We cannot hide from God. He know us, and He wants a relationship with us. We do not need to hide behind a mask with God, because there is no use.
M&M Discussions
If you could switch places with one person in the world and live their life, who would it be and why?

Have you ever knowingly not prayed about something, or asked for forgiveness for something because you felt like you could keep it from God?

Read together 2 Samuel 12:1-14
·      Do we think that this is the first time that David realized that he had sinned?

David tried to hide all of this from God, he didn’t want God to see what he had done. Are there things in this life you need to give over to God?

Have any of you seen Bruce Almighty? At the end, Bruce is with God and God asks him to say a prayer. Bruce prays for the end of hunger and world peace. God says that it was a good prayer, if he were going for Ms. America.  God knows when our prayers are hollow, and he wants to hear our true and heartfelt prayers, even if it shows a completely broken person.

Spend some time in prayer, always know that God knows you, who you are, and what you have done.

10/18 Wake Up! BFC "Tug O' War- Church"

Introduction:

  • List all the different types of churches that you know of.
  • How did we get to this point?
Lesson:

  • Read 1 Corinthians 12. Verses 1-11: What is your spiritual gift? Verses 12-31: Does our church work this way? Do you think that the body of Christ is like this today? Can it be fixed?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 13. While this is often used for a relationship (as it should), it is actually talking about the glue that holds the body together. Is there a love like this in our world today between churches? Let us see if The Movement fits the description by putting our name in where it says love.
  • Read 1 Corinthians 14:1-25. Why is prophecy greater than tongues? Why would the Corinthians prefer tongues to prophecy? Flashier, etc. How much of our worship today is for show, and how much is real?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 14:26-40. Verses 26-28: Basically this is reiterating what was stated earlier in the chapter. If it is not good for everyone, keep it to yourself. Verses 29-33a: It seems in the early church that if the Spirit moved, you followed. Do we allow for the Spirit to move in our services today? Verses 33b-35: Chances are in this time, women and men were segregated during worship. Also, women were not as educated as men, and would not understand everything the (most likely) Greek orator would say. This would cause them to talk amongst themselves, as well as try to talk across the isle to their husbands. This would cause a disruptance and would hinder worship. Verses 36-41: Does this mean that we have to have a set bulletin and be very serious?
Blurred Lines

  • Some churches have taken order to an extreme and made Christianity seem boring. They should be punished. We have the greatest news in the world, it should never be boring.   We live in an age where the church doesn’t quite know what it’s identity is. Truly, it’s one big blurred line.  But reading from Paul today, if you could redefine church as it was supposed to be, both over all and the local church, what would you say?

10/11 Ignite "Masquerade-Smiley Face"

Intro:

  • We began with a game of SPUD, then brought everyone inside.
  • Smiling Game. Everyone creates a smiley face out of a paper plate. They Pair off, and drop their plate from in front of their face. the first person to smile/laugh loses. Continue playing until someone wins.
Devotion- Jared Graves, Youth Minister
Lie to me
  • There is a show on Fox that is called 'Lie to Me'. It is about some investigators who are experts in reading people. They can tell by the smallest twitch if someone is lying or not. Too many times, the Church is a place where people try to lie about how they truly feel, and the hardships they are going through.
  • The church is supposed to be an open and welcoming place. It should be a place for trasnparency and help.
  • We are called by Christ to love one another and to help each other out.
Closing- “Stained Glass Masquerade” by Casting Crowns

M&M Discussion

When you come here for BFC, Ignite, WNL, or worship, you are supposed to come as you are. Why do we feel like we have to act like someone we are not at church?

Do you ever want to go tell someone in the Movement, or in church about difficulties that you are facing in your life?

Can you name 10 people here at BGCC who you know you can confide in and get support from?  People that you can tell anything to and know that they will pray for you and comfort you?

AS a Church (remember, not the building, but the people) we are called to look out for one another, and share openly our struggles and hardships.  Do we do a good job in the Movement of creating that type of atmosphere?

What can we do better to allow you to know that you can say and admit anything?

Look around you, there are people here who care about you. They want to see you legitimately happy, not just putting on a face. We want to be here for you and help you with everything that is going on.

10/11 Wake Up! BFC "Tug O' War: Life"

Introduction
  • What does it mean to have a successful life?
  • Who are considered by the media and pop culture as living a successful and happy life?

Lesson

  • Read 1 Corinthians 9:1-23. Paul digs deeper into the issue of food sacrificed to idols, which we talked about last week. What was the big deal about that? He notes that he too is a strong minded Christian, he has been there and done that. Yet, he has given up some of his rights in order to win some for the sake of the Gospel. Are there things that you have sacrificed in order to advance the Gospel? Maybe it is giving up an activity in order to spend more time in the Word?  Maybe it’s getting out of your comfort zone or your homes and putting yourself out there in the community and in schools were you need to be a light. Has anyone had to do this?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-27. Paul notes that the life of a Christian looks like this. Sacrificing your rights, living a hard life is what the Christian life is all about.  We are in it to win it. Winning a prize not of this world, but something far greater.  Do you see worship as strict training?
Tug O’ War

  • From a worldly point of view, it would seem that those who have the biggest homes, the most money, they define success and happiness. The ‘American Dream’ has been set in front of us and it is our job to get there and do it.  But as a Christian, we know that this stands in sharp opposition to what we are supposed to do.
  • Youtube Video- "American Dream" by Casting Crowns
  • Where is the church’s attitude and current situation on our tug o’ war? Create two sides for the Tug O’ War. What the world sees as a successful life, and what the Bible does. Ask where on that line they would find themselves, and where they would place the Church
  • Where are you? Are you trying to fit in the American Dream, or living someone else’s life, or are you sacrificing and doing all that you can to live a Christ-filled life?

10/11 Snooze Button BFC "Blurred Lines: Friendship"

Introduction
“The Friendship Game”

  • You will fill out a questionnaire about someone you know in the room. Don’t answer questions for each other, make the best guess. See who knows the other person the most.
Lesson

  • Read 1 Corinthians 10:1-13. Why do you think that it is important that he mentions the past? He shows that purity and righteousness is a communal effort.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:14-22. This is a further explanation on food sacrificed to idols. What was the big deal about this?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 10:-11:1. Verses 23-24 Do we have a mindset like this? Do we seek our own good or the good of others? Verses 10.31-11.1: What is the limit on being a people pleaser?
Blurred Lines

  • The world sees friendship how? (You do for me, I do for you, etc).
  • However the Bible has a different view of friendship. Friendship is all about going all out for other people. It is expecting nothing in return, but striving to be always giving and lending a helping hand.
  • Do you think that any of your actions cause your friends to stumble?
  • Do you think that any of your actions or words cause non-Christian friends to stay away from the faith?

Weekly Update 10/5/09-10/11/09

Verse of the week: 1 Peter 2:11-12
Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

What a weekend at BGCC! On Friday we had a great tailgate, then 25 kids at the 5th Quarter following the game. We played 'Capture the Flag', 'Killer', ate food, played Wii, and just enjoyed time hanging out. Then last night was a great night at Ignite. We had 22 kids during Fall Break week! We truly have awesome kids at BGCC and in The Movement.

No Wednesday Night...kind of
Due to Fall Break, we are not having any Wednesday night festivities this week. We will start back next week with a movie, and then follow that week with a couple weeks of discussion.

However, all the girls are invited to Lindsay & Jared's house for a girls night watching "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants". Food will be served at 5:00pm, and the movie should be over around 7:30pm. Please be praying for Jared, he's having a hard time realizing that he is no longer in control!

Sunday
We are continuing our "Blurred Lines" & "Tug O' War" series during our BFC time. Also we will continue our Sunday night "Masquerade" series.
The big thing for Sunday is that the deposit for the fall retreat November 20-22 in Lexington is due. The deposit is $30. We are very excited about this weekend, and as always if you have any questions just shoot us an e-mail at youth@bowlinggreenchristian.org.

Friday, October 16
We will be tailgating at Greenwood High prior to the Central Hardin v. Greenwood game. 5:30-7:00. Make sure the bundle up and join us for some fun!

Saturday, October 17
BGCC will be hosing "Bowling Green's Big Date Night" with a dessert social and a viewing of 'Fireproof'. We can only do this if we provide childcare. We are looking for senior high students to volunteer to work stations for our Fall Festival that we will be hosting during the movie. Also, we will have a movie over in the Youth Center for junior high students. If you are interested, please let us know by e-mailing youth@bowlinggreenchristian.org

Have a great week!

10/4 Ignite "Masquerade-Chameleon"

Devotion- Jared Graves
Intro

  • Students made a mask as if they were getting ready for a Masquerade
Devotion

  • We like to fit in. We find a select number of individuals and call them friends. We adjust our lives, our thoughts, our likes and dislikes based on their views and preferences.  Sometimes this isn’t a bad thing, but often, it is.
  • We change our morals, our stances on right and wrong, and other things because we want to fit in and be cool.
  • We run from mask to mask in order to fit in with a group of friends and clicks.
  • 1 Peter 2:1-12. We are called out, a people not meant to be wishy-washy in our encounters with others. We are to be the example for others to follow, not to follow blindly.
Application

  • We can wear different clothes, we can hang out with different people, but who we are should not change. We should be the same person at all times, not letting others influence us.

M&M Discussion

Discuss the masks that we put on in order to fit in, to be cool, or to act like someone else.

Once everyone has gone, discuss with the M&M how to overcome some of their struggles. Perhaps match people up with others who struggle with the same thing for support.

10/4 Wake Up! BFC "Tug O' War-Friendship"

Introduction

  • "The Friendship Game”- Get with whomever your best friend is. You will fill out a questionnaire and then your friend will have to answer those questions.
Lesson
1 Corinthians 8

  •  The issue is food sacrificed to idols. They would sacrifice food to these false gods, and then sell what was left on the market. Paul says there’s nothing wrong with the meat itself, as long as you are not placing any value on that meat.  However, there are some who have come from that background and are new Christians. They might not be able to blow it off as not a big deal and have an issue with it.  Paul states that we must watch our actions to make sure that we are not causing others to stumble.
Read 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

  • Why do you think that it is important that he mentions the past? He shows that purity and righteousness is a communal effort.
1 Corinthians 10:14-22

  •  This is a further explanation on food sacrificed to idols. What was the big deal about this?
 Read 1 Corinthians 10:-11:1

  •  Verses 23-24: Do we have a mindset like this? Do we seek our own good or the good of others?
  • Verses 10.31-11.1: What is the limit on being a people pleaser?
Tug O’ War

  • The world sees friendship how? (You do for me, I do for you, etc).  However the Bible has a different view of friendship. Friendship is all about going all out for other people. It is expecting nothing in return, but striving to be always giving and lending a helping hand.
  •  Do you think that any of your actions cause your friends to stumble?
  • Do you think that any of your actions or words cause non-Christian friends to stay away from the faith?
  •  In our tug o’ war, where does the church fall? Where do you?

10/4 Snooze Button BFC "Blurred Lines: Worship"

Read 1 Corinthians 8

  • The issue is food sacrificed to idols. They would sacrifice food to these false gods, and then sell what was left on the market. Paul says there’s nothing wrong with the meat itself, as long as you are not placing any value on that meat.  However, there are some who have come from that background and are new Christians. They might not be able to blow it off as not a big deal and have an issue with it.  Paul states that we must watch our actions to make sure that we are not causing others to stumble.
  • What are some issues today that could have a similar conflict? Alcohol, movies you watch, etc.
1 Corinthians 9:1-23

  •  In your spare time, you may want to read this. Paul digs deeper into the issue of food sacrificed to idols. He notes that he too is a strong minded Christian, he has been there and done that. Yet, he has given up some of his rights in order to win some for the sake of the Gospel.
  •  Are there things that you have sacrificed in order to advance the Gospel? • Paul notes that the life of a Christian looks like this. Sacrificing your rights, living a hard life is what the Christian life is all about.  We are in it to win it. Winning a prize not of this world, but something far greater.  Do you see worship as strict training?
Read 1 Corinthians 11:2-16

  • What’s the big deal? Women with their head uncovered were prostitutes.
  •  The underlying message is that in worship we are to be our true selves.
Read 1 Corinthians 11:17-22

  • Once again, the Corinthians were worshipping themselves. They were divided, and when they took the Lord’s Supper they did it for all to see. It was all about them.
Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-33

  • Do you examine yourself when you take communion?
  • Why should they eat a big meal before they come?
Blurred Lines

  • Sadly, much of the world’s thoughts have infiltrated the church. How do many of our traditions, our attitudes, or the worldviews contrast the picture of worship that Paul paints in what we covered today?
